Countdown to the USA

Start your journey in the Visa & Costs section, then click “Apply Now” to create your profile and launch your U.S. adventure. When your deposit is paid, book a compliance call—a supportive video chat to confirm eligibility and answer questions. No grilling, just guidance!
1+ days
Your U.S. host now drafts your DS-7002 Training Plan—detailing company info, your learning goals, and what you’ll tackle in your role. Once it’s ready, we forward everything for sponsorship review, double-checking it matches Department of State requirements.

Info: If a site visit is needed (first-timers, small hosts), it can add ~21 days. We’ll keep you updated the whole way.
7–30 days
Once your placement and plan have the green light and your balance is settled, we send your DS-2019, DS-7002, and SEVIS receipt—all electronically. Use these to launch your J-1 visa application (DS-160 form) and embassy interview. Timelines depend on appointment slots, but we’ll help keep you on track!
3–30 days
We suggest booking your U.S. Embassy appointment as soon as you receive your DS-2019 form. Appointment slots can fill up quickly — especially before the busy summer season (June–September) and around major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas (November–December).
Once your interview is complete, the embassy will usually hold your passport for up to 10 days to process and return it by mail with your visa stamp. Please note that Bridge Aspire doesn’t have control over appointment availability or visa decisions, but we’ll guide you through every step to help make the process as smooth as possible.
10 days
With visa in hand, book your return flights, confirm your insurance, and lock in your accommodation. Our pre-departure orientation (required!) preps you for arrivals, U.S. etiquette, and making your landing smooth as possible.
1 day
You can arrive in the U.S. up to 30 days before the start date listed on your DS-2019 form. Once you’ve landed, be sure to download your I-94 arrival record from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website and visit a local Social Security office to apply for your Social Security Number (SSN).
Your U.S. program sponsor will stay in regular contact to ensure your training is on track — and they’re also available 24/7 for any emergencies throughout your stay.

FAQ: Paid Internships for International Students

Yes, the majority of J-1 Visa internships are paid. Host companies typically offer a stipend to cover living expenses, with average earnings ranging from $2,000 to $4,500 per month, depending on the industry and location. Unpaid internships exist but are rare for the J-1 Intern/Trainee category and are usually limited to short-term non-profit or academic programs.

To qualify for a paid internship under the J-1 Visa, you must meet one of two criteria:

  • Intern: Be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution outside the U.S., OR have graduated within the last 12 months.

  • Trainee: Have a degree plus one year of work experience outside the U.S., OR have five years of relevant work experience (no degree required).

The total cost typically ranges between $3,500 and $5,000 USD (excluding flights and housing). This includes the agency placement fee, J-1 visa sponsorship, SEVIS fee, embassy fee, and mandatory health insurance. While the upfront cost is significant, most participants earn back this investment within the first 3 to 4 months of their paid internship.

Yes, a designated J-1 Visa Sponsor is mandatory. You cannot simply be “hired” by a US company; a Department of State-designated sponsor must vet the placement and issue the DS-2019 form (Certificate of Eligibility). Bridge Aspire manages this entire sponsorship process for you.

Yes and No. J-1 interns are subject to Federal, State, and Local income taxes, just like American workers. However, J-1 participants are generally EXEMPT from FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare), which saves you approximately 7.65% of your paycheck compared to a standard employee.

The entire process typically takes 6 to 12 weeks. This includes finding a placement (2-6 weeks), finalizing the DS-7002 Training Plan (1 week), sponsor vetting and DS-2019 issuance (2-4 weeks), and the U.S. Embassy interview (timing varies by country). We recommend applying at least 3-4 months before your desired start date.

Housing is rarely free, but assistance is often provided. For hospitality placements in resorts or remote areas, employers frequently offer subsidized staff housing (deducted from your paycheck). For city placements like New York or Chicago, participants usually rent shared apartments. Bridge Aspire provides housing resources and guidance for all placements.

No, absolutely not. J-1 Intern and Trainee regulations strictly prohibit working for any employer other than the specific host company listed on your DS-2019 form. Engaging in unauthorized employment (like Uber driving or bar work) is a violation of your visa status and can lead to immediate program termination.

The highest stipends are typically found in Engineering, Technology (IT), and Finance, where monthly pay can exceed $4,000. However, the Hospitality sector (Culinary/Front Office) often offers the highest total compensation when overtime and tips are factored in, along with lower cost-of-living locations.

Yes, with permission. You may travel internationally during your program, but you must have your DS-2019 form signed for “Travel Validation” by your sponsor before you leave the U.S. Failure to get this signature may result in being denied re-entry at the border.

No. The J-1 Visa is a non-immigrant cultural exchange visa with a specific intent to return home. It is not a bridge to permanent residency. Participants are expected to return to their home countries to share the skills and cultural knowledge they acquired in the United States.

You have a 30-Day Grace Period to travel within the United States. During this time, you are no longer allowed to work, but you can travel as a tourist. Once you leave the U.S. during this grace period, your J-1 status ends, and you cannot re-enter on the same visa.

Real Growth. Global Impact.

From London to New York, our participants don’t just visit the U.S.—they launch their careers here. Discover how a J-1 internship became the turning point for ambitious professionals from across the globe.
