The Culture Shock
Survival Guide.

Living in the US is different from a night out in Cork or Leeds. We prepare you for the reality of American life so you can thrive from Day 1.

The “Over 21” Rule

Unlike home, the US is strict. If you are under 21, we’ll place you in cities with amazing under-21 social scenes (music, sports, outdoors).

Tipping Culture

You don’t just leave change. 20% is standard. The good news? If you work in hospitality, this is how you earn $30+/hour.

Small Talk

Americans are famously friendly. “How are you?” is a greeting, not a question. Embrace the openness!

J1 Visa FAQ for UK & Ireland Citizens

Straight answers for international students crossing the pond.

To qualify as a J-1 Visa Intern, you must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic institution outside the US (like a UK/Irish university) OR have graduated within 12 months of your program start date. Your internship must be directly related to your field of study.

The DS-2019 form (“Certificate of Eligibility”) is the most critical document. It proves you have a legal sponsor (like Bridge Aspire) and allows you to schedule your embassy interview. You cannot get a J1 visa without it.

The DS-7002 form is known as the Training/Internship Placement Plan (T/IPP). It is a document required for the J-1 Intern and J-1 Trainee program categories. Only designated sponsors can complete and sign a DS-7002 for each candidate, clearly outlining training goals, learning objectives, supervision, and activities. It ensures that your experience in the U.S. provides hands-on learning — not regular employment. Before receiving your DS-2019, your sponsor will finalize this plan with you and the host company. You will need to present both forms during your visa interview at a U.S. consulate.

Typically, the process takes 4 to 8 weeks from securing a job offer to arriving in the USA. This includes creating the training plan, sponsor vetting, issuing the DS-2019, and the embassy interview in London, Belfast, or Dublin.

For the J1 Intern and Trainee visas, yes. You must have a secured placement with a US host company before we can issue your visa sponsorship documents. This differs from the “J1 Summer Work Travel” visa, where jobs can sometimes be found later.

The Intern category is for current students or recent grads (graduated <12 months ago). The Trainee category is for professionals with a degree plus 1 year of work experience, OR non-graduates with 5 years of relevant work experience.

Costs include the Program/Sponsorship fee, the SEVIS fee (paid to US gov), and the Visa Interview fee (paid to the US embassy). You should also budget for flights and initial living expenses ($1,500+).

Yes, you can travel within the US. If you wish to travel internationally (e.g., to Canada or Mexico) and return, you must get a “Travel Validation” signature on your DS-2019 from your sponsor before you leave.

After your DS-2019 end date, you are legally allowed to stay in the US for an additional 30 days. You cannot work during this time; it is strictly for travel, tourism, and preparing for departure.

Yes. The US Department of State requires all J1 participants to maintain adequate health insurance for the entire duration of their program. Bridge Aspire ensures your coverage meets all regulatory requirements.

Internships can last up to 12 months, and Traineeships up to 18 months. If your original program was shorter, you may be able to extend up to the maximum limit, provided the training plan supports advanced learning.

You will visit the US Embassy (e.g., in London or Dublin). A consular officer will review your DS-2019, DS-7002, and passport. They will ask about your internship goals and your intent to return home. It is usually a quick process.
