The J-1 Exchange Visitor Trainee & Intern program categories are privately funded initiatives and do not receive direct financial assistance from the U.S. government. The funding supporting participants on a J-1 visa primarily comes from program fees and associated payments made by program applicants to Bridge Aspire for the services that facilitate their sponsorship.
These fees contribute to covering the operational costs for the designated J-1 Visa Sponsor’s program services and Bridge Aspire’s facilitation. Please note that program fees do not include any allowance for your international or domestic travel or personal living expenses incurred while in the U.S.
If you are applying with one of Bridge Aspire’s international partner agencies in your home country, please contact your agent to learn about program fees and payment terms, as additional service fees may apply.
Bridge Aspire, in collaboration with your J-1 Visa Sponsor, must ensure that all program applicants demonstrate sufficient funds to meet their living expenses for the duration of their program. The minimum funding guidelines for Bridge Aspire J-1 internship & trainee program participants are generally:
Please note: While Host Organizations are often encouraged to provide a stipend or allowance to program participants, and to consider U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines when contemplating unpaid or below-minimum-wage training placements, these are private arrangements. It usually takes 1-2 weeks after your training program start date to receive your first allowance distribution, but this can sometimes be longer if a background check or other administrative processes are required.
In addition to personal funds and any Host Organization stipend, each program applicant may explore additional funding sources such as scholarships, grants, or support from an outside organization or their home country government. Any such additional funding must be fully disclosed to Bridge Aspire and the J-1 Visa Sponsor at the time of application.
Bridge Aspire, in partnership with your designated J-1 Visa Sponsor, is required to ensure that all program participants (as well as their accompanying spouses and dependents) have adequate health insurance coverage for the complete duration of their programs. This policy, at a minimum, must meet specific U.S. Department of State requirements, including:
Comprehensive Accident and Sickness insurance is typically included as part of your program package. While Bridge Aspire facilitates your enrollment, we are not your insurance provider. You will be enrolled in a compliant insurance policy before your program start date. It is critical that you thoroughly understand the details of your health insurance coverage before you travel. You are required to review the plan in detail to ensure you comprehend its inclusions and, most importantly, its exclusions.
This insurance coverage is mandatory for your program dates as reflected on your Form DS-2019 only. Bridge Aspire strongly recommends you secure additional insurance coverage for any grace period months if you plan to arrive before your program start date or remain in the U.S. after your program end date. If you do not purchase additional insurance and require medical attention during your grace period, you will be personally responsible for all medical expenses. Please be aware that medical costs in the U.S. are extremely expensive.
Please note that the standard policy provided typically does not cover pre-existing conditions. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, we strongly recommend that you research and consider purchasing additional, specialized insurance coverage. You may also inquire with your Host Organization’s human resources team if they offer any group policy options that might include coverage for pre-existing conditions.
Having insurance coverage does not mean that your healthcare services will always be without cost. Depending on the medical treatment you receive, you may incur out-of-pocket costs (e.g., deductibles, co-pays). If you need to seek medical attention, you must show proof of coverage under your health insurance policy, so it is crucial to carry your insurance ID card with you.
For additional details about your health insurance coverage and how to contact your insurance provider, please refer to the specific insurance plan documents provided to you by your J-1 Visa Sponsor.
Except in cases of potentially life-threatening medical emergencies, you must contact your insurance provider before seeking medical treatment. They will guide you in confirming details of your coverage and help you locate a participating (in-network) provider. If you choose an out-of-network medical provider, you may not receive full insurance benefits and will potentially incur significantly higher out-of-pocket expenses.
Bridge Aspire, in collaboration with your J-1 Visa sponsor, must ensure that all program applicants possess sufficient English language skills to effectively function on a day-to-day basis within their training environment and in general U.S. society. This determination is typically made through a documented interview conducted via video conferencing as part of your application process.
Your Bridge Aspire Program Administrator will conduct a meeting with you, usually towards the end of the application process, to discuss your program details and to verify your English language proficiency.
To provide a general benchmark, your English language comprehension and conversational skills should be approximately equivalent to:
This ensures you can fully engage with your training, communicate effectively with your Host Organization team, and confidently navigate daily life in the U.S.
Section 212(e) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, also known as the Two-Year Home-Country Physical Presence Requirement, is an important consideration for some J-1 (and J-2 dependent) visa holders. If you are subject to this requirement, it means you cannot:
The U.S. Consular Officer at the embassy/consulate and/or the DHS officer at the port of entry determines whether this requirement applies to you. Any notation(s) regarding 212(e) can typically be found on your Form DS-2019 (in the bottom left corner) and/or on the visa page of your passport. Bridge Aspire does not influence this determination. For specific details on how and if the 212(e) rule may apply to you, please consult the official U.S. Department of State resources.
